B. A. Communication Studies - Leadership & Public Advocacy

Communication Studies major with a concentration in Leadership and Public Advocacy focuses on developing the skills needed to influence, inspire, and guide others in a wide range of professional and community settings. Students in this area learn how messages shape decisions, how organizations communicate change, and how leaders use rhetoric to build trust and mobilize audiences. Through coursework centered on interpersonal communication, public speaking, strategic messaging, and conflict management, I have gained both the theoretical foundation and the practical expertise needed to navigate complex communication environments. The concentration also emphasizes ethical leadership, preparing me to advocate effectively while fostering collaboration and inclusivity.

This concentration extends beyond traditional communication skills by training me to have an informed, confident voice for social, political, and organizational improvement. I have explored how advocacy campaigns are built, how public debates are shaped, and how communication can drive meaningful change at the local and global levels. Whether working in nonprofits, government, community organizations, or corporate settings, I am prepared to lead initiatives and champion issues that matter. In essence, Communication Studies with a leadership and public advocacy focus prepares me to not only communicate well, but to use my voice to make an impact.

Minor Communication Studies - Health Communication
Estimated Graduation Date: Spring 2028
Minoring in Health Communication allows me to explore how messages influence health behaviors, patient–provider relationships, and public understanding of medical issues. I now have the tools to communicate clearly and ethically in high-stakes environments. Through courses that examine health campaigns, risk communication, cultural influences on health, and the role of media in shaping perceptions, I have gained a strong foundation for supporting healthier communities. This minor enhances my ability to translate complex information, advocate for wellbeing, and collaborate effectively with healthcare professionals. These are all valuable skills for careers in public health, nonprofit work, healthcare administration, and any community outreach.
